  • ( ) Tiny printer licks label problems

For those who are still creating paper trails in the digital age, a new miniprinter might help. The BrotherQL-570 Label Printer, due this month for $99, pops out a wide variety of peel-and-stick labels with your own text and graphics.

Since the stickers come in rolls, you can switch formats as needed. The rolls can be up to 2 3/7 inches wide; the labels can be pre-cut standard sizes or custom lengths. Because the resolution is 300 by 600 dots per inch, you can even add high-resolution logos or photos. The printing is thermal, so you cannot run out of ink.

The QL-570, which weighs 2.5 pounds, does require a USB-cable hookup to a Mac or PC and software installation. Full-size printers can handle sheets of labels, but this device makes printing one-offs easier. More>>

  • ( ) Muur-Lab Launches 3D Printing Service

SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- 3D visualization company Muur-Lab has launched a new service to produce real-world models of buildings, medical models and 3D scanned objects. Using revolutionary print technology Muur-Lab can create and produce physical 3D models direct from computer-generated images offering significant time and cost savings over traditional model creation methods. The new service builds on Muur-Lab's extensive experience and expertise in the creation of 3D visualizations and architectural models. Muur-Lab's 3D printers produce a physical model of a computer-generated design in much the same was as a standard desktop printer produces a hard copy replication of a document. Using proprietary software the computer design is 'sliced' into thousands of ultra fine layers. Each layer is then 'printed' by spreading a sub millimeter thin layer of composite powder onto a base and the model is built up with subsequent layers of powder fixed together using a liquid binder. I bought that printer used, and well before Mac OS X came into existence. Nevertheless, the Mac found it on the network, knew how to drive it and did a perfect job with absolutely no effort -- or knowledge -- on the user's part.
